Why Drive in Sicily With Children?
Sicily is the largest and arguably one of the most beautiful islands in the Mediterranean Sea, no wonder that it’s been consistently sought-after through the centuries by several great powers around the world. The influence of Greek, Roman and Arabian cultures is strong, leaving this island with a unique multicultural scene and history in addition to its whitewashed, cypress-lined beaches and excellent cuisine.
There’s something about a Sicily roadtrip for families who want to to discover this beautiful island. We come for the gorgeous beaches and the longing for la dolce vita, and keep dreaming about and planning our return to experience more of the island’s genuine culture, explore fascinating archeological sites and friendly locals.
A Sicily Itinerary for Adventurous Families
This itinerary is for those of you who want to experience the full diversity of what this magnificent island has to offer through driving in Sicily with children! Please note that if you prefer a slower pace and have more time on your hands, feel free to add more days to the destinations you are most curious about.
This itinerary has been carefully designed after our own trip to this magical place back in September 2025, and it includes all of our highlights on the island!
- The white-sand Caribbean-style beaches of San Vito Lo Capo
- The vast Greek ruins of Selinunte and Agrigento
- The authentic countryside & historic sites around Piazza Armerina and Enna
- The dramatic volcanic landscape of Etna
- And finally, the lively cultural hub of Catania

When to Go?
The best months for a family road trip in Sicily are:
- May–June: warm, sunny, not too hot, ideal sea temperatures
- September–October: gorgeous weather, fewer crowds
- July–August: possible but hot & crowded—schedule beach days early and late
The 6-Day Family Road Trip Itinerary in Sicily
Day 1 – Fly into Palermo → San Vito Lo Capo
Start your Sicilian adventure in ancient Palermo – landing directly on the island’s economic and historic capital for a cultural immersion, think amazing street food, incredible churches & a cultural hotpot.
- Pick up your rental car at Palermo Airport.
- Spend a relaxed few hours exploring Palermo’s historic centre—grab arancini’s, stroll Piazza Bellini, or visit the Cathedral.
- Then drive 1 hour 45 minutes to the seaside paradise of San Vito Lo Capo, one of Sicily’s best beaches for families thanks to shallow water and soft sand. With its relaxing vibe and impressive mountain backdrop, it’s the perfect time to watch the sunset and enjoy your first apero.

Driving time: ~1h 45m
Day 2 – San Vito Lo Capo → Selinunte
A slow beachy morning!
- Enjoy a relaxing beach session in San Vito Lo Capo, soaking up the scenery before departure.
- Have lunch at one of the many seaside trattorias (the couscous dishes here are famous!)
- Drive south to Selinunte, home to Sicily’s most spectacular, open-air archaeological park! While there, dine in Lido Zabbara(Hot tip! Their freshly caught fish is to die for) that has an amazing view to the ancient temple situated right next to the white-sanded beach.
Where to sleep: Selinunte or Marinella di Selinunte
Driving time: ~2h 15m
Day 3 – Selinunte Beach Day (No driving day!)
Let’s be honest, we all love exploring new places, but it can get tiring, especially with little ones in tow. We highly recommend choosing one day of your trip where you don’t have to think about getting in the car.
- Enjoy the beautiful beaches around Selinunte—calm, quiet, and ideal for toddlers
- Or explore the Selinunte Archaeological Park, which is spacious, stroller-friendly, and full of Greek temple ruins kids can climb around safely
Tip: Consider hiring an electric buggy to make it extra fun for kids.
Day 4 – Selinunte → Agrigento → Scala dei Turchi
Well rested and with that post-sun glow, it’s time for discovering Sicily’s ancient history and dramatic coastlines.
- Morning: Drive to Agrigento and visit the Valley of the Temples—one of the world’s best-preserved Greek sites, be prepared to have your jaw dropped at this UNESCO-listed wonder! Stroller-friendly paths make it easy for families.
- Lunch: Enjoy Sicilian plates at a local trattoria, Agrigento is especially known for it’s almond pastries like ciarduni and mastazzola.
Fun tip! Make a point out of looking for the almond trees growing around the area on your drive here, to make the indulgent almond treat even more special once arrived and have an entertaining game for the road.
- Afternoon: Head to Scala dei Turchi, a breathtaking white cliff formation where kids can play, climb, and paddle until sunset.
Where to sleep: Scala dei Turchi or the closeby seaside town of San Leone (ideal for families)
Driving time: ~1h 20m (Selinunte → Agrigento), +15 minutes to Scala dei Turchi
Day 5 – Scala dei Turchi / San Leone → Piazza Armerina → Optional: Enna → Catania
Get excited to drive further into the hills of Sicily, where tourists are far and few in-between and the island’s secrets will be revealed to you. Step away from the beaches for a moment to deep-dive into the unique culture and history of Sicily that keeps us coming back!
Stop 1: Villa Romana del Casale (Piazza Armerina)
Make sure to stop by the most incredible Roman mosaics in the world! Villa Romana del Casale in Piazza Armerina is the supreme example of a late-imperial Roman luxury villa and represents a fundamental testimony for understanding Roman life and civilization. This one will surely impress both you and your little ones,
The entire site is stroller-friendly thanks to raised walkways.
Optional Stop: Enna
If you have time:
- Visit Castello di Lombardia, a stunning medieval fortress with sweeping views of Sicily
- Enjoy lunch with a view over the rolling hills
- Experience slow, authentic Sicily away from the coast
Arrive in Catania
A charismatic, lively city with fantastic food and a beautiful historic centre.
Where to sleep: Catania
Driving time:
Agrigento → Piazza Armerina: ~2h
Piazza Armerina → Enna: 30m (optional)
Enna → Catania: 1h
Or Piazza Armerina → Catania directly: ~1h 20m
Day 6 – Explore Catania / Parents’ Etna Adventure (Kid-Free!)
Catania is a fantastic base for a final day of exploring. Families can:
- Wander Via Etnea and Piazza Duomo
- Enjoy the fish market
- Visit the Roman theatre
- Eat incredible granita for breakfast (mandatory!)
